Kaua'i’s Royal Coconut Coast

The beauty of the Royal Coconut Coast runs deep, encompassing everything from the golden sands of its beaches to its spectacular mountain backdrop to the small town charm of its shops, restaurants and hotels.

The home of Hawaiian royalty in bygone years, this lively and inviting section of East Kaua'i is bounded by Kealia to the north and Opaeka'a Falls to the south. In the center of it all is the town of Kapaa, a convenient base for all your Kaua'i adventures and an attraction in its own right with some of the island's best dining and shopping.

The Royal Coconut Coast is rich in historical associations. For residents and visitors alike, it's fascinating to learn about the people who walked these shores centuries ago - and to see what they left behind. Many sacred sites can be found near the mouth of the Wailua River, including the Pohakuhoohanau Royal Birthstones, the Place of Refuge and several Heiau, or temples.

Whatever your interest, the Royal Coconut Coast offers something special for you. Click here for special offers from our members!

Wailua State Park and Wailua River

Wailua State Park and Wailua River

Wailua River State Park is the home of the Wailua River. The 20-mile river's source is 5,148-foot Mount Waialeale in the center of the island. You can negotiate Hawaii's longest navigable river by boat, kayak, or outrigger canoe. Kuamoo Road (Hwy. 580, or King's Highway) goes inland along the north side of the river from Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56).

Opaeka'a Falls

Opaeka'a Falls

Opaeka'a Falls is an unforgettable waterfall with the scenic peaks of the Makaleha Mountains in the background and a restored Hawaiian village on the riverbanks.

Sleeping Giant

Sleeping Giant (Mt. Nounou)

The Sleeping Giant is an odd formation on a mountain ridge between Wailua and Kapaa, a quirk of nature that has given rise to many myths and legends. Some say he was tricked into eating rocks and fell asleep on a full tummy never to wake again. Others say he nodded off -- for eternity -- after he ate too much at a celebration. The view from Sleeping Giant is stunning and it's not hard to get there. Mount Nounou Trail is less than a 2-mile hike to the top of the mountain. The trail head is on Halelilo Road in Wailua.

Poli'ahu Heiau

Poli'ahu Heiau

Poli'ahu Heiau is one of seven heiau along the banks of the Wailua River and stands across the road from the Opaeka'a Falls overlook. The personal temple of Kaua'i's last king, Kaumuali'i, legend states that this large enclosure of black lava rock was built by the Menehune.
